BILLY
RAYMOND
HOME.
1970s
During the 1970s Billy continued to travel between the UK and Australia.

In 1970, Billy won the Australian Penguin Award for best support in a variety series (The Rose and Crown).

He became compere of TEN-10’s Late Late Show for a run of 13 shows.  The show, screened from midnight till 2 a.m., was well received by the late night audience.  It ran until October 1970.

From 27 June he also took over the stage production of all  shows at the Doncaster Theatre Restaurant, the first show of which was Ice Revue 1970.

Billy had by then formed three companies:
Billy Raymond Enterprises, which handled club entertaining;
Creative Television Ltd. (The Late Late Show etc.);
Ashley Stage Productions (for the Doncaster Theatre Restaurant).

One of the Doncaster Theatre productions was called “Talk of the Town”, which starred Billy, Irish singer Moira Briody (formerly of Scottish Television’s “One O’Clock Gang”), and Larry Burns and Sallyann.

However, Billy lost $A43,000 on the Doncaster Theatre Restaurant project (please see 1973).

Billy did a couple of guest spots in one of the, as Billy puts it, “really big TV shows” called “Sound of Music”.  He recalls that one of his guest spots was a segment of the musical “Brigadoon”, the other one(s) were varied, depending on each show’s requirements.

Billy also did inter- and intra-state TV shows, one-offs in Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth and fund-raising Telethons all in regional towns.  The main shows/series were, however, made in Sydney or Newcastle.
